Discoverability Index

Indice de découvrabilité, BAnQ

Measuring the digital influence of Québec culture

As part of its digital transformation, Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ) has begun a strategic reflection on the discoverability of the institution’s cultural content. To support this approach, Synapse C was mandated to lay the foundations of a discoverability index to measure the presence and visibility of the cultural offer (books, music, audiovisual, museums) in digital environments.

Monitoring, analysis and modelling work

Synapse C first conducted an in-depth review of existing initiatives in the area of discoverability and digital outreach, highlighting the indicators used, the monitoring methods and the strategies adopted here and elsewhere. This comparative analysis made it possible to identify the levers and pitfalls associated with the design of a relevant, viable and evolving index.

From this base, the team proposed a conceptual framework to guide the development of a discoverability index, integrating quantitative dimensions such as search engine visibility and platform presence.

A structuring project for the cultural ecosystem

At the same time, Synapse C also contributed to identifying the internal datasets within BAnQ that could be opened and mobilized to feed this index. Interviews were conducted with five cultural stakeholders (Cinémathèque, MNBAQ, Métamusique, INRS, DeMarque) to document their current and potential uses of BAnQ data, thus confirming the strategic value of such an initiative.

This project lays the foundations for a new tool to measure the influence of Quebec cultural works and better guide dissemination and discoverability policies at the national level.
